PRELIMINARY EXERCISE: RESEARCH AND PLANNING!

PRELIMINARY EXERCISE: RESEARCH AND PLANNING:

3 dramas similar to Drown the past:

  • TOP BOY

Numerous montages of London (markets, fish markets, and meat markets) that are edited quickly serve to illustrate how bustling and nonstop London is.
Additionally, it highlights that graffiti and rubbish represent a completely distinct part of London that isn't necessarily glamorous. As the shots switch between locations and the actors, the editing rate gradually quickens. Top Boy uses several cuts to go between various images of places and people, eventually connecting them all together. The editing in this series adds to the perplexity and a sense of secrecy, which enhances the criminal genre and the story.

  • LUTHER

As the antagonist tries to clean the metal box, non-diegetic music plays at the beginning of the crime drama, heightening the tension. As the antagonist frantically searches for something, the music gradually gets louder. When it is discovered, the music becomes quieter as he announces, "I've got you."  When Luther, however, enters the scene, the music abruptly stops and only diegetic sound is audible.
  • THE SHEILD FX

The performers' faces are shown in close-ups, which adds tension and mystery to what is happening in the background. The tension is increased by the hand-held camera's wobbly movement and several back-to-back shots of both performers and close-ups as soon as the weapon is drawn.

Shot list:

Mise-en-scene:

C: The main character, Amelia will be wearing an everyday comfortable outfit because she is a regular character. the second character who will be the detective, she will be wearing a coat that will show the professionalism of the "detective" job. These characters will look very normal so that the audience can get familiar with them.

L: There will be low-key lighting used, as this is a key convention of a crime drama, but also normal room light so that it doesn't seem to be just an act to the audience and make them feel like as if it's really happening as it will seem very subtle.

A: In the whole 3 minutes there will be 4 characters and one of them will be dead. One of them is a detective, and one is the mother who is shown to be the villain and the sister of the dead sister that this crime scene will be based on.

M: The casts will have natural minimum makeup, they will show their everyday type of look, and there will be use of blood to show that this is a crime-related drama linking back to the age rating of 12+. The blood would be on the sister's hand as she hides the body in guilt.

P: In this 30-second clip there wouldn't be any props shown just yet, however in the actual 3-minute scene the props that will be used are a bracelet and a detective board. in this 30-second clip there is a notebook held by the detective.

S: The setting will be in the house for this 30-second clip, this is my first location where the investigation starts to begin and where the body is found dead. This is also so that the audience can get familiar with the characters know who is who, and familiarise themselves with the place.

Shooting schedule:

The location will be the house, I would need my sister who would be my camerawoman and one of my characters. There would be a range of shots used in the 3 minutes alongside facial expressions that would link to the shots that will be taken for example when amelia is doing a guilty task removing blood from her hands, the camera will do a close up on the the hands.
