COURSEWORK: SUMMER PROJECT 2023:

Research: TV crime drama extract analysis:

TV crime drama extract 1: Narrative and genre
How is the narrative and the crime drama genre communicated to the audience?

TOP BOY

By displaying montages of London, the first scene of the show establishes the tone for the entire series. To link to the criminal genre and the story of drugs, illegal activity, and youth, they purposely highlight the rough and unclean portion of the area. The performers' slang-heavy dialogue also contributes to the crime drama genre.

TV crime drama extract 2: Mise-en-scene
What do you notice about the use of mise-en-scene to create meanings for the audience? Think CLAMPS.

PEAKY BLINDERS

Peaky Blinders' outfits convey a lot because they provide the impression that the series is place in the 1920s, which deepens the story's meaning. The majority of the lighting is low-key and backlit, which adds to the series' eerie atmosphere and sense of mystery. The church's dim lighting gives the audience context by suggesting that the kids aren't being well-cared-for. Because the performers are British, they perfectly fit the story and the Birmingham locale. Due to its position as the second-largest city in England after London, the city plays a significant role in the crime drama's plot.

TV crime drama extract 3: Camerawork
Here you are looking for particular camera shots and movement. E.g. Are close-ups used to show the reaction of key characters to the audience? How are establishing shots used?

THE SHEILD FX

The performers' faces are shown in close-ups, which adds tension and mystery to what is happening in the background. The tension is increased by the hand-held camera's wobbly movement and several back-to-back shots of both performers and close-ups as soon as the weapon is drawn.

TV crime drama extract 4: Editing
Analyse pace, transitions, number of shots and juxtaposition e.g. eyeline matches. How is editing used to create meanings for the audience?

TOP BOY

Numerous montages of London (markets, fish markets, and meat markets) that are edited quickly serve to illustrate how bustling and nonstop London is.
Additionally, it highlights that graffiti and rubbish represent a completely distinct part of London that isn't necessarily glamorous. As the shots switch between locations and the actors, the editing rate gradually quickens. Top Boy uses several cuts to go between various images of places and people, eventually connecting them all together. The editing in this series adds to the perplexity and a sense of secrecy, which enhances the criminal genre and the story.

TV crime drama extract 5: Sound
Analyse both diegetic and non-diegetic sound in the extract - music, dialogue, voiceover, SFX, background or foley sound.

LUTHER

As the antagonist tries to clean the metal box, non-diegetic music plays at the beginning of the crime drama, heightening the tension. As the antagonist frantically searches for something, the music gradually gets louder. When it is discovered, the music becomes quieter as he announces, "I've got you."  When Luther, however, enters the scene, the music abruptly stops and only diegetic sound is audible.

My statement of intent:

My TV drama will be called Drown the past which is about two sisters, growing up as bsfs. Amelia is jealous of her younger, eva as she is so successful in her life and shes got everything that amelia always wanted. Eva is found dead. The season unravels the murderer of Eva and the backstory as to why this happened. This would appear as the first episode from the first season, there in total are 10 episodes for this storyline, this will be ending in a cliffhanger.

To make sure my plan meets the brief to an exceptional extent, i have addressed 2 locations that scenes will be shot these include the home of the protagonist and the park. crime genre conventions will be shown through props and appearance, such as blood and the crime of being involved in such incident not too much violence will be shown as the rating of the tv drama will be disqualified. The communication of my narrative and convention is clear as it can be linked to Propp's theory: this will show who the main protagonist is and the villain but to excite the audience and create enigma codes the villain of the drama will not be easily defined and will question many audience as to who the real villain is because the way the camera shots will be taken.

My target audience are middle class netflix users. This will be streaming on netflix as many teens binge watch shows on here and also this will be reach to their suggested list on netflx.

This drama will subvert the stereotype of the male being the villain in every storyline, as this season will show the female as the villain, a male is usually seen as the well knowing and most powerful character and the female is shown as the weak and emotional one, however this show the opposite on what every typical audience would expect the villain to be. This links very nicely to Gauntletts theory of masculinity being in crisis, he believes that masculinity is not in crisis, and so that they are adapting to the modern world this subverts the idea of men always being dominating and the hero or villain in every movie, However the argument of masculinity being in crisis could be shown in this show as the women are increasingly assertive and successful, men are anxious and confused in this show the women is holding the power.

Stuart Hall's theory of negotiated and preferred reading can be used in this drama too, as audience may misunderstand the story and assume that the message of the drama is to show that females are psychopathic to be committing such a crime and childish that she would be anonymously texting Amelia. Blumer and Katz, uses and gratification theory links to this drama,I believe the diversion will fit well with my targeted audience, as audiences will escape from everyday life as they would be trying to binge watch the episodes to find out who the real villain/killer is.

My magazine will include the main key conventions of a magazine which includes a cover line, price, title, dateline etc.. This will include a central image of the main character with subtle and eye catching colours, the background of the front cover may be darker so that the focus stays on the protagonist so audience question more about the magazine and the drama, taglines and cover lines will be short so that readers are not bored but engaged, The magazine will be simple but descriptive to make sure that viewers do not ignore but in fact be interested.
