EDITING BLOG TASK:

ALADDIN:

The actor who played the role of genie is Will Smith and the actor who played Aladdin is Mena Massoud. The movie, Aladdin, a kind their who woos Jasmine, the princess of Agarbah, with the help of genie. When Jamar, the grand vizier tries to usurp king, Jasmine, Aladdin and genie must stop him from succeeding. This specific scene is right after when Aladdin rubs the lamp and the genie comes out who helps Aladdin and his monkey pet, Abu get out of the trap that Jamar put them in. When the genie comes out tells Aladdin about the three wishes and how it can be about anything, the wish Aladdin decides for is to become prince so that he can woo princess Jasmine.

The setting of the scene is in a desert, which in a metaphorical way we can refer that it is representing isolation in some way that relates to the genie as he was isolated and trapped in the lamp for almost 2000 years.

The scene opens with a medium close up shot of genie, alongside genies medium shot we see his magical smoke that disappears and dissolves into a drink almost as if he is on a holiday which can reflect to the movie because it’s his first time being out of the lamp. The scene shifts to a medium shot of Aladdin who has shocked facial expressions as he is really confused on how genie is doing what he’s doing. This scene uses the 180 rule in which the shots reverse and the eye contact is the same and it is shot from the same side of both characters conversating. The scene uses a lot of transitions to emphasise the power that the genie has. These transitions are mainly used when the genie changes his outfits to show Aladdin and when he moves about the desert. The main type of transition that is used is the dissolve as the magic dust dissolves into a new item or object. The shot moves out to a long shot and then to a medium shot when someone starts speaking this is done so that the audience doesn’t get bored of seeing the same shot reverse shot over and over again.

A match on action shot is used when the genie is moving around and changing in sizes. This starts from when he’s laying on the chair, shrinks and lands on the chess board dissolves into the magic dust and the camera cuts, its starts shooting again when genie is human size and is sat on his chair again.

When Aladdin asks the genie “why don’t you set yourself free?” And when the shot reverses to the genie to show his facial reaction of the question, the camera shot shifts to an extreme long shot when the genie talks to the carpet. The scene then goes to a flashback to remind each other if a wish was used or not, this flashback is shown through a transition, by showing the things that happened after the “wish” was set to the right of the beginning this is done in order to remind the audience what the genie can do and what has happened so far.

When Aladdin mentions about one thing he wants, the camera angle changes to a medium low angle with a close up shot, showing the genies exciting reaction and when Aladdin tries to explain his story about jasmine the camera shot changes to an over the shoulder shot. The close up of genies reaction to Aladdins mention of the wish indicates his excitement and interest in Aladdin story, this then is forecasted in the upcoming scenes of the movie and genie is one of the main guy in terms of jasmines and Aladdins relationship.

Once Aladdin has an idea of his wish as he states “can you make me into a prince?” He stands up in excitement and in thoughts genies mood changes from his excitement to a serious mood as if its time for his business, we see the mood change as soon as Aladdin announces his wish he disappears in magic dust and transitions back into his chair and starts asking him questions on how “he needs to be more specific with his wish.” The camera angles changes each time from high to low this is because Aladdin is standing and the reply that comes from genie is sitting. This then also creates the enigma code in terms of it questions the audience as to how he’s going to become the prince especially when genie gives many different ideas, confusing the audience that keeps them interested and engaged.

There is also action code represented through the magic dust that comes along the genie because it tells the audience, helps them to predict that this movie is like a fairytale and very supernatural.

The costume of the characters well describe the characters background, Aladdin who is theif but also the hero and protagonist of the film dresses in a sense of way that helps the audience know what genre this movie is. The genie is dressed in a way that shows the audience that this is a supernatural character and of course doesn’t exist in real life.

Natural lighting is used throughout the film, with camera lights that comes along with shooting the film, The scene is dark before the lamp is rubbed (as they are trapped) but when the genie comes who saves them from the trap, they sit in broad daylight which can indicate that he is going to be the problem saver each time with his magic and he’s going to be Aladdins best man in the film.
